Disaster Recovery Plan
The increasing dependency on IT systems for business operations, one needs to have a disaster recovery solution in place to ensure the rapid recovery and continuity of your business, in case of occurrence of a disaster of outage.
Businesses that fail to have a disaster recovery solution often experience huge losses - both to their finances and their reputation - in the aftermath of an IT outage.
Book NowAny business in London faces a variety of risks that could cause critical systems down. A fire could destroy equipment. Servers can stop working, and disk drives can go bad. Aside from physical accidents, malware and viruses can intentionally destroy data.
Mishaps like these can happen to any business. You need to be prepared for the worst, so you can get the data back and have the servers running without too much downtime. What you need is a disaster recovery plan (DRP).
What is Disaster Recovery Plan
Cloud disaster recovery services are being offered that allow the provision of secondary IT resources in the cloud. This enables the rapid recovery of business-critical infrastructure in the event of a disaster.
It’s not to confuse this with backup as a service, which allows you to save copies of your essential data in the cloud. Backup as a Service (BaaS) is just one Disaster Recovery Plan solution but there are many others. It’s a comprehensive service area that can include provision of a complete shadow of your production systems in a separate off-site infrastructure.
Disaster Recovery Plans offerings are not all the same, however, so it’s important to choose your supplier with care. You also need to be able to trust your provider to keep your data secure and to recover your systems within the agreed timescale and meet other critical objectives.

Types of Disaster Recovery Plans – for Businesses in London
Broadly speaking, DRPs can be grouped in to three categories.
- Offsite data centre. This is a do-it-yourself solution, best suited for large businesses with a full IT staff. Dedicated backup and failover systems are located in a data centre, preferably some distance from London. This approach is very customisable and offers good performance, but it requires a serious investment of money and effort.
- Cloud disaster recovery. Using the cloud for disaster recovery is popular because of its economy and reliability. Failover servers are allocated only when they're needed, and data backup is geographically distributed. It requires less maintenance than dedicated systems.
- Disaster recovery as a service. The DRaaS approach is usually cloud-based, but it's presented as a managed service. As long as it's well run, the customer doesn't need to understand the details. What's important is the SLA. The RTO and RPO have to be acceptable, and the consequences if the service fails to meet them should be spelt out. DRaaS places the least burden on the business, so it's often the best choice for smaller organisations.
